Phase 1: Prevention

The first step in waste management is actually preventing waste in the first place. Trash doesn’t just happen, both large and small decisions we all make every day determine how much trash we collectively generate.

What can you do?

Waste generation, and therefore waste prevention, starts with you. There are many things an individual can do to significantly contribute to reducing or even preventing waste. The first step is to be aware of how you generate waste. Do you always purchase items with lots of packaging? Do you consistently buy too many perishables and throw them out in the trash? When you clean out your closet, do you donate the items or do they end up on the curb? Once you’re aware of how your daily decisions impact the amount of waste you generate, you can start changing your behavior.

What can we do together?
Since we generate trash together, we should also prevent it together. The best way to prevent waste is to be aware of how we generate waste, change our behavior and inspire others to do the same.
